But first... what is retro?

Retro is a recurring interior trend that embraces colors, organic lines, and nostalgia. It contrasts with the classic, minimalist Scandinavian style that is otherwise prevalent in modern nordic homes.

Retro encompasses the entire history of interior design, but particularly stands out in the iconic retro periods of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. These decades are characterized by exciting homes with room made of warm colors, personality, and quirky details.

So, how do we at DPH Trading recommend you bring retro into your home? Read on below for our 5 great tips!

5 great tips: How to decorate with retro elements

1. Use colors and create contrast

Bold colors like yellow, orange, and red, as well as olive green and blue, are often associated with retro, especially when you create contrast by combining vibrant colors with earthy tones like burnt sienna. - There's nothing that screams retro interior design more than contrasting colors in the home!

Don't mix all the bold colors together, as it can quickly become cluttered and simply too much. You can incorporate these bold colors through decorative items while keeping larger furniture pieces in more neutral colors.

You can also use pastel colors, but be careful not to rely solely on them. Introduce a single vibrant color among the soft tones to create contrast.

2. Highlight the soft shapes

One of the major characteristics, especially from the 1970s, is the soft silhouettes that emerged from the more relaxed lifestyle of the 1960s and beyond.

There are numerous ways to incorporate soft shapes into the interior design, and it doesn't necessarily have to be through larger furniture. For instance, it could be in the form of retro lamps, a beautiful plate wall, or with vases and jars in stoneware, ceramics, and faience.

3. Eye for the details

Regardless of the style you decorate with, it all comes down to the details. - It's here that you can create an atmosphere! There are plenty of things you can use to create the right retro style and atmosphere, such as small porcelain figurines or vases and bowls in colored glass.

Remember to pay attention to quality when shopping for retro details. Not all things with the perfect retro look have the same quality standard, and they might show signs of being many decades old. - And that's quite unfortunate!

4. More is more

You might be familiar with the expression "Less is more." But you can forget that expression when it comes to retro! Retro is all about filling your home with diversity and personality through an abundance of interior items.

Fill your home with all the right trinkets, vases, lamps, cushions, and nostalgic objects so that in the end, it reflects your entire personality in all its glory.

5. Be bold and original

It might seem quite overwhelming. All the many colors, materials, and patterns that need to complement each other, how is it even possible? But the answer is actually quite simple; you need to set your worries free and let your playfulness take over. - Because only that way can retro interior design succeed.

It's part of the style that the room, in a figurative sense, is loud, busy, and perhaps even a bit quirky. All of it in the most personal, lively, and liberating way. - So be brave and dive into it!
